MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Karian Wise is an Interaction Design Strategist at Trying Together, a Pittsburgh nonprofit dedicated to high-quality early childhood care and education. She facilitates the Everyday Interactions Matter approach, helping educators reflect on their relationships with young children. Karian also teaches early childhood education at Carlow University and brings nearly 20 years of experience as a teacher, program director, and youth coach. She is a passionate advocate for children, families, and inclusive, high-quality learning experiences.

EARLY INTERVENTION AND INCLUSION FROM THE CLASSROOM PERSPECTIVE
TUESDAY, JULY 29 • 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
This session provides a comprehensive overview of Infant/Toddler and Preschool Early Intervention (EI). Participants will be guided through a newly developed EI Toolkit created specifically for early care and education programs. The EI referral and assessment timelines will be described, and participants will learn how to support families and connect them with services. Participants will also learn how to use the EI Toolkit to access additional tools and resources that support EI and ECE collaboration, positive behavior support, developmentally appropriate practices, and inclusive classroom environments. Participants will leave this course with an understanding of how to support young children and their families in accessing and utilizing EI services in inclusive early care and education settings.
TRAUMA-INFORMED CLASSROOMS: SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH TRAUMA
TUESDAY, AUGUST 26 • 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
This course provides an in-depth exploration of trauma and its effects on child development and behavior. Participants will learn how trauma influences learning, emotional regulation, and interpersonal relationships. Through interactive activities and case studies, educations will gain practical strategies for creating trauma-informed classrooms that support all students. The course emphasizes recognizing signs of trauma, responding with empathy, and fostering a safe environment that promotes healing. By the end, participants will be equipped with the tools to better support the social and emotional needs of children, ensuring a more inclusive and nurturing learning space.
HOW TO HANDLE AND NAVIGATE “CHALLENGING” CONVERSATIONS WITH FAMILIES
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 • 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
Having challenging conversations with families can be overwhelming and unpredictable at times, but it is often necessary when working with parents and children. To help ease this challenge, participants will learn how to navigate and conduct such conversations using professional and constructive language how to formulate a plan of action, and how to communicate in a way that helps families feel heard.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CREDIT
Participants are eligible to receive a minimum of 2 and up to 6 hours of PQAS and ACT 48 credits by attending the session(s) and completing registration by scanning the QR codes. Please allow up to six weeks for credits to be reflected in your PD Registry account.
